§ Mr. Llew Smith
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions when he received a copy of the Commission Communication on the present situation regarding prospects for radioactive waste management in the European Union, COM(1998) 799, dated 11 January 1999; what assistance the United Kingdom nuclear authorities gave to the Commission in its preparation; and if he will make a statement on the implications of the report for radioactive waste management in the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. Meale
A copy of the report was received in January this year. United Kingdom input to the report was co-ordinated by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions with assistance from producers of radioactive waste. The international perspective provided by the report may prove useful in considering how to respond to the report on nuclear waste management which the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology is expected to produce shortly.
