§ Lord Tebbit
asked Her Majesty's Government:
How many people have died in the United Kingdom at the hands of previously convicted killers since 1963.
§ The Minister of State, Home Office (Baroness Blatch)
During the period 1963 to date, a total of 87 persons in England and Wales are known to have been killed by persons who had previously been convicted of homicide in England and Wales.
The increase of 12 cases since the reply given to the Question from the noble Lord on 25th May 1995 is accounted for as follows:
- Convictions since May 1995: 5
- New information received about cases from earlier years: 7
Figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland are not readily available.
