To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the implications of the spillage of toxic chemicals on a cross-channel ferry to Ramsgate in the second week of September, and its subsequent journey on the motorway network.

This incident concerned the spillage of approximately half a litre of benzyl chloride from a road tanker while leaving the vessel Sally Eurolink at Ramsgate. The incident was satisfactorily dealt with by 463W the crew, and the lorry continued its journey. The incident did not demonstrate any deficiencies in the current procedure under the emergency schedule in the international maritime dangerous goods code.
