HC Deb 11 May 1993 vol 224 cc451-2W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what was the number of people in work in each month since May 1991.

Mr. McLoughlin

The work force in employment is published on a quarterly basis only. The available information is as follows:

Workforce in employment in the United Kingdom seasonally adjusted
March 26,336
June 26,044
September 25,845
December 25,681
March 25,625
June 25,450
September 25,052
December 24,960

Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many young people have been unemployed in Darlington in March, June, September and December in each of the last four years.

Mr. McLoughlin

Claimant unemployment figures by age are produced quarterly for the months of January, April, July and October, and can be obtained from the NOMIS database in the Library. These figures are not adjusted for seasonality.

Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what levels of(a) total, (b) male, (c) female and (d) 16 to 25 years, unemployment was identified by the 1991 census.

Mr. McLoughlin

The definition of unemployment used in the 1991 census of population differs from the claimant court definition and the internationally recognised ILO definition used in the labour force survey. It does not include an "actively seeking work" criterion. The information requested is as follows and relates to Great Britain:

(a) total: 2,484,509
(b) male: 1,710,891
(c) female: 773,618
(d) 16–24 years: 762,597
