To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will list the actual forecast financial contributions from industrial sources of the research, development and demonstration programmes for renewable energy run by the energy technology support unit for the years 1991 to 1998 broken down for each of the seven research programmes, biofuels, wind power, solar power, small-scale hydro, geothermal, tidal and wave power.

Forecast external financial contributions from the renewables programme in total were £7.1 million for 1991–92 and £7.8 million for 1992–93. These totals were not broken down into individual technologies in line with the strategy published in Energy Paper 55. Targets for beyond 1992–93 will be considered as part of the current review of renewable energy strategy.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what proposals he has for(a) bringing forward the Renewables Order 1992 and (b) updating the guidance available for the encouragement of combined heat and power.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will make a statement on the progress of negotiations with the Commission of the European Communities on extending the 1988 time limit for the application of the non-fossil fuel obligation with respect to sources of renewable electricity generation.
