To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list each national scenic area in Scotland, the square kilometres occupied by each area, the total of all national scenic areas in the Shetland islands, the Orkney islands, the Highland region, the Western isles, Grampian region, Tayside region, Strathclyde region, Central region, Fife region, the Borders region, and Dumfries and Galloway region; what is the total percentage cover of national scenic areas over the whole area of Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

The information requested is given in the table, with areas shown in hectares. National scenic areas which lie in more than one region are marked with an asterisk. There are no national scenic areas in Fife or Lothian regions.
The total hectarage amounts to 1,017,300, or approximately 12.91 per cent. of Scotland's surface.
"National Scenic Area" is a designation which recognises the character and quality of those landscapes which are considered to merit special protection in a national context.
