asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the future of neighbourhood watch schemes.

We welcome the contribution neighbourhood watch schemes are making to police-community co-operation to prevent crime. While it is too early to draw firm general conclusions, initial indications from a number of schemes are that neighbourhood watch can be effective. Evaluation of neighbourhood watch is currently being conducted in the Metropolitan police district and we await the results with interest.
