HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 cc100-1W
Dr. Owen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the latest figures available for the number of his Department's staff engaged on health and personal social services; and how they are broken down into (a) administrative groups, (b) common services, (c) health (non-National Health Service), (d) professional divisions and (e) administrative and support service to professional divisions.

Mr. John Patten

The number of staff in DHSS headquarters involved in health and personal social service work on 1 December 1983 was estimated to be 4,021. This total can be broken down as follows:

(a) Administrative Groups 1,351
(b) Common Services 870
(c) Health (non-NHS) 144
(d) Professional Divisions 869
(e) Administrative and Support Services to Professional Divisions 787
Total 4,021

A significant number of headquarters staff service both health and social security activity. The figures in categories (b) to (e) represent the best estimate of the time spent by these groups of staff on health and personal social services work.
