§ 29. Mr. Warren
asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the progress 652W of the investigation into the enhancement of radioactivity in sea water when it is converted into sea spray which is being conducted for his Department by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority.
§ Mr. Waldegrave
Research in Cumbria sponsored by my Department, in conjuction with UKAEA and BNFL, has shown that airborne sea spray carries back to land up to 0.01 per cent. of the radionuclides discharged into the sea from the Sellafield plant and has assessed the significance of this phenomenon. The conclusion is that the resulting environmental concentrations of these nuclides lead to an exposure of at most about 1 per cent. of the internationally recommended limits for the protection of the general public. Summaries of the research to date have appeared in the scientific press and in the progress reports on radioactive waste research which are published by my Department and deposited in the Library of the House.
