§ Mr. Proctor
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis concerning the incidents of public disorder which took place in Tottenham, London, on the evening of Monday 1 November and in the early morning of Tuesday 2 November; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Mayhew
I understand from the commissioner that late in the evening of Monday 1 November six youths were seen attempting to enter the social club on the Broadwater Farm estate. Police officers who were called chased and arrested one youth and took him to Tottenham police station. At 12.45 am on Tuesday morning about 30 people went to the police station to demand his release. A glazed door at the station was broken and one of the protesters was arrested and charged with causing criminal damage. Some of his associates attempted to prevent the arrest and three were arrested and charged with obstructing the police. The youth arrested on 1 November was released on condition that he return to the police station later in the month. The four people arrested at the police station have been bailed to appear at Tottenham magistrates' court.
