asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his latest estimate of his Department's expenditure for 1981–82 on unemployment benefit and on supplementary benefit in support of those unemployed and their families; and on what average level of unemployment it is based.

The latest estimates for 1981–82 are

Unemployment benefit 2,004
Supplementary benefit to the unemployed 2,000

based on an average unemployment level of 2,840,000 used in the report by the Government Actuary on the Benefit Uprating Order 1981—Cmnd. 8296.
