asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, pursuant to his reply of 3 November, Official Report, c. 442, and that of the Secretary of State for the Environment of 5 November, Official Report, c. 607, both to the hon. Member for Dundee, East, where the costs to his Department of the Mullwharcher inquiry are variously estimated at £17,719.31 and £8,700, what the definitive cost was; and how the disparity in cost resulted.

My answer of 3 November gave, as asked, the costs of the inquiry including mounting and holding the inquiry and preparing and circulating the report and all associated correspondence. The answer of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment on 5 November referred, as asked, to the costs incurred by my Department in preparation and in presenting the evidence.
