§ Mr. Nicholas Edwards
The A5 from Llanfair PG to Holyhead is at present the subject of a route study. This will enable me to decide how best the route might be improved to meet long-term needs. I am fully aware of the strategic importance of the road in Anglesey. There are presently four schemes programmed and one scheme under construction, as follows:
Island of Iona could be compulsorily acquired either by the Government, local authority or public corporation; and what would be the basis of compensation in each case.
§ Mr. Rifkind
I am not aware of any powers which could suitably be used for the compulsory purchase of Iona for the purpose of preservation by a Government Minister or a public corporation. Local authorities have powers of compulsory purchase, subject to ministerial comment, for the purposes of their functions under section 71 of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 and section 102 of the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1972, though I am doubtful how far they could suitably be used for the acquisition of Iona. Where such powers are exercised, compensation is as 339W provided for in the Land Compensation (Scotland) Act 1963 and 1973.
