§ Mr. D. E. Thomas
asked the Secretary of State for Employment what have been the average weekly earnings of male manual workers in Wales for each year since 1964.
§ Mr. Booth
Following is the information available for men manual workers, aged 21 years and over, in Wales:
October Average weekly earnings* £ 1964 18.04 1965 19.30 1966 20.09 1967 21.14 1968 22.91 1969 24.46 1970 27.93 1971 31.10 1972 35.61 1973 40.52 *The industries covered are manufacturing, mining and quarrying (except coal mining), construction, gas, electricity and water, transport
and communication (except railways and sea transport), public administration and certain miscellaneous services.
When comparing these figures with those for other areas it should be borne in mind that the averages can be affected by influences such as variations in the pattern of industry. Comparisons may not therefore give a precise indication of differences in earnings for comparable work.
