§ Captain W. Elliot
asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what were the numbers of children of State schools in 1964 and 1969 in primary schools and secondary schools, respectively; and what was the Exchequer contribution per child, excluding money, allocated for building.
§ Miss Bacon:
The numbers of children in State schools in England and Wales in 1964 and 1969 are as follows:
Exchequer assistance towards local authority expenditure on education was given in 1963–64 through the general grant and in 1968–69 through rate support grant, both paid by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. The grants were in aid of expenditure as a range of rate fund services (the range being greater under rate support grant) and it is not possible to say just what proportion of expenditure on education was met by Exchequer grant.
