§ Mr. Moonman
asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the arrangements being made in England and Wales for making awards from public funds to postgraduate students.
§ Mr. Edward Short
Arrangements are being made, in agreement with the local authority associations, for the central government to take over from the local education authorities responsibility for new awards to postgraduate students from the academic year 1969–70 onwards. Discussions are being held with the Departments concerned and with the Research Councils on the division of responsibility for making such awards.305W
In due course the Education Act, 1962 will be amended to remove the local education authorities' power to make awards for courses for which central government accept responsibility.
