The Advisory Council on Scientific Policy estimated total expenditure on civil research and develop228W ment in the United Kingdom for the years 1955–56, 1958–59 and 1961–62 at £122 million, £243 million, and £388 million, respectively. The figures represent approximately 0.7 per cent., 1.2 per cent. and 1.7 per cent. respectively of the gross national product in each year. Figures are not available for earlier years.
