asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in view of the disproportionate expenditure 56W incurred by local police forces in the control of abnormally large loads conveyed along roadways, if he will arrange for such expenditure in all cases to be defrayed from Government funds.

No. My right hon. Friend can see no reason for departing in this instance from the long-established practice whereby half of police expenditure is met from the Exchequer and half from the rates.
