§ 90. Mr. Tilney
asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a statement on the plebiscite that 112W has recently taken place in the North Cameroons; and what instructions were given to British officers on the impartial execution of their duty in connection with this plebiscite.
§ 94. Mr. R. Edwards
asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the situation of the Northern Cameroons, following the plebiscite which resulted in the rejection of federation with Northern Nigeria; and what instructions were given to British officers concerning the execution of their duties in relation to this plebiscite.
§ Mr. Iain Macleod
The result of the plebiscite reflects the wish of a majority of the people to defer a final decision on their future. It is not a decision for or against any particular solution of that problem. The Administration of the plebiscite by both expatriate and local officers took place in accordance with the Regulations made by the Governor-General under the Nigeria (Northern Cameroons Plebiscite) Order in Council. I will put copies of these Regulations in the Library.
