asked the Minister of Labour how many men were employed in collieries in the Central East Area, Scotland, on 1st January, 1947; how many are now employed in this area; and how many he expects to be employed in this area by July, 1957.

I understand that there were 13,200 wage earners on colliery books in this area on 1st January, 1947, and 12,200 at the beginning of this20W month. The number for July, 1957, cannot be precisely estimated, but the employment tendency is downwards.
