§ Captain Plugge
asked the Minister of Health whether inquiry has been made as to the danger of cases of typhoid fever being caused by people bathing in the sea into which crude sewage is discharged; 582W whether his Department has any views on this matter; and how many towns in the country do discharge crude sewage into the sea?
§ Sir K. Wood
Investigations by the Royal Commission on Sewage Disposal show that any sewage discharged is rapidly rendered innocous in the sea. Sewage is so discharged by many towns but before approving schemes my Department require tidal observations to be made to ensure that the outfall is placed where the sewage will be carried out to sea and not returned to the beaches.
