§ 33. Dame Joan Vickers
asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs what arrangements have been made for local elections to be held on the islands of Nevis and Anguilla.
§ Mrs. Hart
Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom are no longer responsible for the internal affairs of St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla. In courtesy to those hon. Members who discussed these matters with me before statehood was granted, I can convey my understanding of the present position. I understand that the Nevis Island Council was inaugurated on 20th April with nominated members, and that the offer of a nominated Council was also made to the people of Anguilla, but their reply had not been received before the Premier left St. Kitts on his present tour. Elections will, of course, be held later this year.
§ Dame Joan Vickers
Will the Minister of State say exactly when the elections are likely to be held? Further, I understand that money is held by the central Government—when will this be allocated to the islands?
