§ 32. Mr. G. M. Thomson
asked the President of the Board of Trade what new industrial enterprises planned for Dundee are likely to be in production by 1962; what is the estimated increase in employment these new enterprises will produce; and what proportion of the new jobs provided will he for youths under 18 years of age.
§ Mr. Thomson
Is it not true that the Government have completely failed to bring any new major firm to the Dundee development district and that all the firms which are expanding went there during the period of the Labour Government? Is it not scandalous that the Minister should have no information about the amount of employment to be provided for young workers under the age of 18? Are not the Government betraying those young people who had the misfortune to be born in the year 1946?
§ Mr. Macpherson
No, Sir. The information arises when application is made for industrial development certificates. It is inevitable that at that time the information about jobs which will arise must be in a fairly round figure. It cannot be particularly accurate and it cannot be divided between particular age groups.
