§ 6. Mr. G. Campbell
asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what response there has been so far to the scheme, announced on 22nd December, 1959, for providing training in fishing for men living in certain areas of Scotland.
§ Mr. Leburn
Of the 22 applicants for training under the Outer Hebrides Fishing Training Scheme, 17 have been accepted. Four men from Eriskay started training yesterday when they joined the local ring net fleet at Mallaig; four men from Barra will start on seine net boats at Oban on Monday, 9th May; and the other nine will be placed for training very soon.
§ Mr. Campbell
I am grateful to my hon. Friend for that information, but is he aware that several experienced skippers from the Moray Firth have offered under the terms of the scheme each to train a man on board his boat? Will these valuable offers be taken up?
§ Mr. Leburn
My hon. Friend will be interested to know that of the 29 skippers who have agreed to accept candidates for training, 20 are from Lossiemouth and district. The introduction of this scheme for the Outer Hebrides has been made possible only by the co-operation of owners and skippers of fishing boats from elsewhere in Scotland, and I should like to take this opportunity of thanking them.
