§ 25. Mr. C. Hughes
asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken to provide trained teachers in St. Helena.
§ Mr. Lennox-Boyd
This is a difficult problem to which the Governor has been giving much attention. It would be hard to cover the ground adequately in reply to a Question and I propose to write to the hon. Member. Perhaps he may wish to put down a further Question after receiving my letter.
§ Mr. Hughes
Will the right hon. Gentleman reconsider two possibilities: first, the paying of higher salaries to the trained St. Helenian teachers already there, in order to keep them on the island, and secondly, a scheme with one of the larger education authorities in this country so that some of our teachers could go to St. Helena for a short time?
§ Mr. Emrys Hughes
In view of the fact that previous dictators have been exiled to St. Helena, could not the right hon. Gentleman be persuaded to go there to look after the dam mentioned in answer to Question No. 24 personally?
