§ 4. Mr. Cyril Bence
asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what steps he is taking to improve the rate of housing in those districts where building labour is most difficult to obtain.
§ Mr. H. Macmillan
In districts where building labour is scarce, and indeed elsewhere, I am encouraging building by so-called "non-traditional" methods. This will supplement the maximum attainable production of traditional houses. Several well-proven types are available in a variety of designs at about the same cost as ordinary brick built houses. They save man-hours on the site and so can be put up more quickly. I will send the hon. Member a copy of a circular I am addressing to all local housing authorities on the subject in a day or two.
§ Mr. Bence
Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that already there is growing evidence that in many parts of the country there is a movement of labour and raw materials to residential areas for houses to be built for sale to the detriment of local authorities and contractors to local authorities who cannot get labour or raw materials?
