§ Mr. Eden (by Private Notice)
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any statement to make about the recent riots in Alexandria?
§ The Minister of State (Mr. Noel-Baker)
I regret that I am not yet able substantially to add to the reports of the disturbances in Alexandria which have appeared in the Press. Unfortunately it has been confirmed that attacks were made yesterday on British naval and military establishments and that in the course of these attacks two British soldiers were killed and one was wounded.
I am also informed that the British troops involved were beleaguered and 186 attacked and that it was only after this had happened that they were obliged to open fire. I am now awaiting further reports from His Majesty's Ambassador in Cairo and until I have received them I think I should add nothing further except to express my grave concern at these incidents and my sympathy with the relatives of the British soldiers who have lost their lives.
