§ 42. Mr. Thorne
asked the Home Secretary why Fireman W. J. Mercer, registered No. 146, stationed at Silvertown, West Ham, was discharged on medical grounds without any compensation?
§ Mr. H. Morrison
This fireman was discharged on account of sickness, after the 680 maximum period of sick leave on full pay to which he was entitled. This was not a case of injury and there is no provision for compensation.
§ Mr. Thorne
Is my right hon. Friend aware that one of the troubles this man was subject to was due to the fact that he slept in a bed in which another fireman had slept who was suffering from a disease which I cannot pronounce?
§ Mr. Morrison
My information is that the fireman's illness, for which I am sorry, had no connection with his work in the Fire Service. If my hon. Friend has evidence to the contrary, I shall be glad to consider it.
