§ 58. Mr. Silkin
asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether 1034 he is aware that restaurant charges have increased since they have been limited; and what action he proposes taking in the matter?
§ 59. Major Lyons
asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether the inquiries into the working of the house charges for hotels, permitted under the recent Order, have now been completed; and what reductions and withdrawals are proposed where prices are now equal to, or more than, formerly?
§ Mr. Mabane
As I have indicated previously, my Noble Friend instituted an inquiry into the facts in the central London area. The conduct of this inquiry was entrusted to an accountant and has now been completed. My noble Friend is at present reviewing the existing and provisionally authorised house charges in the light of the evidence now available and taking into consideration the capital charges which have to be borne by the various establishments concerned.
§ Major Lyons
As this review has now been concluded, will my hon. Friend take some steps to see that there is a stoppage put to this racket which his Department has created?
