§ 68. Major Carver
asked the Minister of Agriculture the quantities of lime and basic slag provided at cheap rates since the Government scheme began; and whether he is satisfied that adequate facilities exist for the transport of these and other fertilisers at the present time?
§ The Minister of Agriculture (Colonel Sir Reginald Dorman-Smith)
Up to 24th February applications for contribution under the Land Fertility Scheme have been received in respect of approximately 4,030,000 tons of lime and 1,120,000 tons of basic slag. As regards the second part of the Question, I am aware that the heavy strain on transport facilities at the present time is causing some delay in the 557 movement of fertilisers, and I am in consultation with my right hon. and gallant Friend the Minister of Transport on the subject.
§ Mr. Wilfrid Roberts
Is the Minister satisfied that there are adequate supplies of basic slag to meet spring demands?
§ Mr. Thorne
Are not a lot of wagons used for this purpose which ought to be used for carrying coal?
