§ 72. Mr. de Rothschild
asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has considered representations from the Isle of Ely County Council with regard to the increasing burden of drainage rates on the 898 smallholdings administered by the council; and what conclusion he has come to on the question of alleviating this burden?
§ The Minister of Agriculture (Mr. W. S. Morrison)
Although I have not received any representations from the Isle of Ely County Council on the subject mentioned for some years, I am aware of the council's views. I do not feel, however, that I can take any action in the matter.
§ Mr. Turton
Is the Minister aware that the burden of drainage rates on smallholdings throughout the country has been greatly increased by the Land Drainage Act, 1930, and will he appoint a committee to examine this matter?
§ Mr. Morrison
The question of a possible amendment of the Land Drainage Act, 1930, is now under consideration, but I am not prepared to say in advance what amendments are necessary. I think it would be difficult to justify any differentiation between smallholdings and other holdings in the matter of drainage rates.
Mr. De la Bère
Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the burden on the whole agricultural community wants alleviating?
