asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the number of females daily employed underground in mines under the Indian Mines Act for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date; and whether the reduction of these workers is taking place regularly according to the statutory provision?
§ The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Earl Winterton)
The employment of women underground in mines in India was prohibited with effect from 1st October, 1937.
§ Mr. T. Smith
Is the Noble Lord satisfied that the number has been reduced in accordance with the regulations passed by this House?
§ Earl Winterton
The hon. Member cannot have heard my answer. The employment of women underground was prohibited from 1st October, 1937. The original regulations passed in 1929 provided that there should be progressive reduction.
