The total amount of subsidy paid to the sugar-beet industry 21 in Great Britain since 1st October, 1924, the date on which the subsidy first became operative is £40,817,595, of which £37,164,911 was paid in respect of the 12 years before the operation of the Sugar Industry Act, 1936. The value of the sugar produced during this period is estimated to be approximately £58,000,000.
