§ 21. Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE
asked the President of the Board of Trade what schemes for preventing coast erosion are in operation in the United Kingdom; how many persons are employed thereon; and whether he will consult with the Minister of Labour as to the practicability of undertaking a large-scale programme of coast protection?
§ Mr. W. GRAHAM
The Board of Trade are not in a position to give complete figures as to schemes in operation, but some 28 schemes for, or embodying, coast protection works are being carried out, with the add of grants from the Unemployment Grants Committee or the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and, at the latest dates for which figures are available, these schemes employed over 1,800 men. As regards the third part of the question, the initiative in preparing coast protection schemes rests with the local interests affected.
