Mr. MONTAGUE BARLOW
asked the President of the Board of Trade the number of unskilled labourers employed in loading and unloading vessels in the ports of the United Kingdom, in the docks at Liverpool, and in Manchester and Salford, respectively; the numbers in each case in fairly regular employment; and the numbers that have applied for Poor Law relief during the last three years?
§ The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Tennant)
The best approximate estimate which can be given of the number of labourers engaged at ports in the United Kingdom, 2132 in the loading and unloading of vessels, including the storage of goods at dock warehouses and wharves, is from 120,000 to 140,000 As regards the other matters referred to in the question, I am not at present in a position to give statistical details, but if the hon. Member will communicate with the Board of Trade we shall be glad to give him any assistance in our power.
