§ Mr. WEIR
asked what is the estimated cost of providing a school for the children of the settlers on the island of Vatersay, Barra; in view of the fact that the Congested Districts Board some four months ago sanctioned an expenditure of £400 to secure a water supply for Vatersay, what progress has been made with the water scheme; and what provision exists at the present time for the education of the children?
§ Mr. URE
As my hon. Friend is aware, the squatters in Vatersay have hitherto been there in defiance of the law, and no provision exists for education. I understand that in view of the scheme of settlement of the island by the Congested Districts Board the school board are preparing to provide a school, but I have not so far any information as to cost. Considerable progress has been made with the water scheme, and if the weather holds good it is anticipated that the scheme will shortly be completed.
