§ MR. J. M. MACDONALD (Falkirk Burghs)
I beg to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, under the scheme recently adopted for disposing of the sewage of Cairo, the great sewer is to be laid for several miles in the bed of the Jebal Canal which in the Nile mouths 1711 supplies water to the districts beyond the village of Matarieh; whether, if so, there is reason to fear that a leakage from the sewer into the canal may some time occur; and whether, in view of the possible risks of this, he will advise the Egyptian Government to give opportunities for public discussion of the scheme before embarking upon it.
§ THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir EDWARD GREY,) Northumberland, Berwick
I beg to refer the hon. Member to replies returned to Questions asked on this subject by the hon. Member for the Tyneside division of Northumberland on the 16th ultimo and 7th instant. Till I receive the Report for which I have called I can say nothing on the point in question.
