§ MR. R. DUNCAN (Lanarkshire, Govan)
I beg to ask the Secretary for Scotland what was the specific nature of the understanding given by the local authority of the burgh of Dumbarton in 1903; what was the nature of the works to which the said undertaking bore reference; whether he is aware that no purification works have been begun, and that all the sewage of the burgh now enters the Leven in an unpurified condition; whether this state of matters has his approval; and, if not, whether he 1072 will see that the Local Government Board now take steps to have the undertaking given by the burgh carried into effect if such should involve the construction of purification works.
§ MR. SINCLAIR
I am informed that the suggestion of the hon. Member as to a specific understanding on this subject is not fully sustained. The Local Government Board after an inquiry by their medical inspector pressed the removal of certain nuisances to which he had drawn attention. They now propose to inquire into the question of the condition of the sewage when it enters the Leven.
§ MR. R. DUNCAN
asked if other burghs had been compelled to undertake sewage purification works by the Government?
