§ MR. CLANCY (Dublin Co., N.)
I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, as representing the Postmaster-General, whether postmen are entitled to an extra day's pay for extra work on each bank holiday; if so, whether, in the county of Dublin and other parts of Ireland, 1428 that additional remuneration has been paid in respect of any of the bank holidays of 1898, or of such of those days of this year as have yet come; and, if it has not been paid, what is the cause of the delay?
§ MR. ANSTRUTHER (for the SECRETARY to the TREASURY)
Postmen are entitled to be paid pro rata for attendance on bank holidays, in addition to their ordinary pay. As far as can be ascertained, payment has been made in due course in Ireland generally, except as regards some of the country sub-offices near Dublin, where, it is regretted, delay appears to have occurred. Special inquiry is being made in the matter, and the honourable Member may rest satisfied that no time will be lost in making payment where warranted.
