§ MR. WHITMORE (Chelsea)
I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether he can now state what is the result of the consideration which he has given to the claims to superannuation of the attendants and messengers at the South Kensington Museum?
§ THE SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. JACKSON, Leeds, N.)
I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave to a question on this subject on August 22 of last year, in which I stated the decision of the Treasury that these messengers and attendants have no legal claim to the benefits of the Superannuation Acts, but that I would see whether it would be possible to meet in any way what I might describe as a sentimental feeling on the part of the men that they had a claim to some consideration. In fulfilment of the pledge then given the Treasury submitted a proposal to the 229 Science and Art Department. Some objections have been raised to it which I have carefully considered, and the Treasury is about to make some modifications which I hope will finally settle the matter.
