§ MR. ADDERLEY
asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, What steps have been taken towards carrying out the recommendations of the West African Committee?
§ MR. CARDWELL
replied, that orders had been given for the final abandonment of M'Carthy's Island not later than the end of June. As regarded the more general recommendations of the Committee, the Governor of Sierra Leone had been appointed Governor of the Lower Settlements. The estimates, including those for steam communication, had been approved by the Treasury, and would be submitted to Parliament. The Governor of Sierra Leone had received instructions to make arrangements for the reduction of the establishment at Lagos. That objectionable state of the law which was proved before the Committee to have existed with regard to domestic slavery would be met either by an alteration of the law or by a restriction of the area of territory.
